Colorado Taekwondo Institute

Moo Sul Kwan Martial Arts was brought to the United States by Great Grandmaster Lee H. Park in 1969.  The first school was established in Cape Girardeau and at Southeast Missouri State University.  From that date on September 1, 1969, MSK has grown to include schools in St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, Perryville, Sikeston, Jackson and other cities in the midwest, including Moo Sul Kwan eventually being spread to Colorado and Florida.

Lee H. Park was born to Sangsoon and Eungkyo Chang Park on December 25, 1939.  He graduated from Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea, in 1965, and married Yung Kim on August 18, 1969.  Grandmaster Park moved from Korea to Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  GGM Park worked at Southeast Missouri State University as a physical education professor. He received a B.S. in Accounting at SEMO University in 1973 and an M.A.T. Degree in Physical Education in 1979. 

Grandmaster Lee H. Park served as president of Moo Sul Kwan and the American Martial Arts Sports and Education Association until his death in June, 1988.  Grandmaster Park was vice-president of the International Council on Martial Arts Education and he was chairman of the Teacher Certification Committee, International Council of Martial Arts Education.  He had previously served as a Delegate at Large at the National AAU Taekwondo Committee, was a past president of the American Hapkido Association; past chairman of the Subcommittee of Safety and Equipment Development, National AAU Taekwondo Committee; and a past chairman of the Regional Board of Examiners, American Taekwondo Association. 

Great Grandmaster Park was a certified 9th dan black belt by the World Taekwondo Federation and 9th dan black belt in Hapkido by the Moo Sul Kwan Hapkido Federation in Korea and 5th dan black belt by the Korean Yudo Association.  He is a Hall of Fame member of the World Taekwondo Federation, Seoul, Korea, and was one of the two highest ranking Moo Sul Kwan Hapkido instructors in the world.

Today, Moo Sul Kwan has programs in Missouri, Colorado and Florida, including many clubs, like at Southeast Missouri State University, and numerous before and after school programs at many public and private schools like Red Rocks Elementary School, Carmody Middle School, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School, West Woods Elementary School and Montessori Peaks Academy.

Since 1988, the original Moo Sul Kwan founded by Lee Park has been led by Grandmaster Charles F. Hildebrand, President, and Grandmaster David A. LeGrand.  The other Moo Sul Kwan master instructors:

• 7th dan - Jim Sautel
• 6th dan - Rick Schutt, Mike Morton, Doug Johnson, Steven Dunn, Mindy Sautel, Ralph Hendrickson, John Sautel and Denise Pingel
• 5th dan - Bill Evans, Bill Jones, Erik Albrechtson, Alan Williams

Won Kwang-Wha was Lee H. Park's Hapkido instructor.  He served as a personal secretary and body guard to Suh Bok-Sub's father, a congressman named Suh Dong-jin. Having first learned hapkido from Suh he later studied directly from Choi Yong-Sul, founder of Hapkido. In 1962, when Kim Moo Hong opened up his Shin Moo-Hong dojang in Seoul he became one the instructors there. Shortly thereafter Won opened his own school the Moo Sul Kwan.  Some of his notable students were Park Lee-Hyun, Kimm He-Young, Won Hyung-Dae.

Nam Suk Lee was Lee H. Park's Taekwondo instructor.  Nam Suk Lee was the leader of Chang Moo Kwan which he founded with In Yoon Byung in 1946.  Chang Moo Kwan was one of the five original kwans organized after WWII.  Nam Suk Lee had an incredible influence on the Korean art of Taekwondo which today has over 60 million students.
